Engineer Dr. Dorothy Okello sparkles in male-dominated profession

What is your greatest extravagance?

I love West African fabric to the extent that I have a full suit case of them untailored.

What is your current state of mind?

I am in state of relaxation

What do you consider the most overrated virtue?

People believe so much in achieving big in a short time. While life around us is moving so fast, we should not be so taken up by it. Rather we work hard to achieve the big we want.

On what occasion do you lie?

If telling the complete truth would do more harm or be so damaging.

What do you most dislike about your appearance?

As a young girl, I used to be so critical of my legs thinking they were too small but I have since made peace with myself.

Which living person do you most despise?

Hate is emotional and so consuming to the person who is doing it. It is, therefore, too much energy and brain capacity that I don’t have.

What is the quality you most like in a man?

Listening and understanding to others.

What is the quality you most like in a woman?

Ability to take stuff, evaluate and be slow to react. Not that she should accept to be anyone’s punching bag, but have room for a ‘why’.

Which words or phrases do you most overuse?

Not any I can think of.

What or who is the greatest love of your life?

My family and that includes my parents, husband and children. They allow me to be the person that I am.

When and where were you happiest?

January 1998 when I got married to Mr Okello; having my children has also been wonderful moments.

Which talent would you most like to have?

I love to dance so I think it would help if I learn to dance better.

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

How I wish I could create more time so that I have more with my family because sometimes as a mother, I feel guilty.

What do you consider your greatest achievement?

God has also enabled me to do a number of things especially for the engineering fraternity as a male dominated area. I have had an opportunity to serve on several boards of reputable institutions in the country

If you were to die and come back as a person or a thing, what would it be?

I like being of service and I can do better as I am.

Where would you most like to live?

In terms of having fresh and clean air, you can’t beat Uganda. But for a huge cosmopolitan city, Montreal in Canada is the best. If I had to relocate, I would no doubt head there.

What is your most treasured possession?

I am not a property attached person; I am only who I am because of the blessing of God.

What do you regard as the lowest depth of misery?

Being terminally ill or dealing with someone who is going through such an illness.

What is your favorite occupation?

Teaching engineering; it is fulfilling doing something that enables me find solutions to problems in the community.

What do you most value in your friends?

Shared character.

Who are your favorite writers?

I used to love reading novels by Danielle Steel because with them, you don’t think too big. I have however relapsed in reading.

Which historical figure do you most identify with?

I also much identify with the likes of Nelson Mandela and other people who have been so helpless, given up so much and stayed comfortable with little.

What does being powerful mean to you?

It is having a strong circle of influence around you but this can be positive and negative.

What is the greatest thing that you have ever done?

I have been very fortunate to successfully complete my engineering programme by 2004. It is not something easy only that it happened at a time when my mother passed on which clouded it.

Who are your heroes in real life?

There are many people from whom I borrow a leaf and I can’t zero on one.

What are your favorite names?

There is a way I am attached so much to ‘J’ names.

What is your greatest regret?

There are things that I could have done differently but to me living a life of regrets means being miserable.

What is your motto?

‘The grace of God has brought me this far’ .
