Besigye charged with treason, detained in Moroto

Museveni, 71, who has been in power for three decades, was declared winner of the February poll with 61 percent of the vote.

He has rejected claims his victory was won through cheating and fraud.

Museveni was sworn-in for a fifth term in office on Thursday at an event attended by foreign heads of state and diplomats.

He used the occasion to criticise the International Criminal Court (ICC) sparking a walk-out by diplomats from the US and European Union.

6.30 PM: DEVELOPING STORY

Reports just in indicate that Uganda’s main opposition leader Dr Kizza Besigye has Friday evening been charged with treason at Mororo Chief Magistrate’s Court.

According to reports, FDC party’s Besigye who has been in detention since Wednesday, was remanded to Moroto government prison in Karamoja until May 25 when he will re-appear in court for further mention of the treason case.

Jane Kajugo from the DPP’s office confirmed the developments, reported leading Kampala radio station KFM 93.3fm.

The prosecution told Moroto Chief Magistrate, Charles Yeteise that Besigye while in Kampala held unlawful processions.

“We have been informed by police today that Besigye appeared in court in Moroto and was charged with treason,” lawyer Erias Lukwago told AFP.
