Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | More than 150 families in Mutungo Zone III in Nakawa division of Kampala city who are affected by the construction plan of Jinja-Kampala Express highway road are still waiting in for compensation in vain.

According to the residents, it is now three years since Uganda National Roads Authority -UNRA valued their land and properties for compensation and asked them to open up bank accounts, but shockingly, they haven’t received a single coin, yet they were stopped from carrying out any other development activities on their land.

During their meeting with the area leaders, the locals complained that since the evaluation exercise, they have not heard any response on the delays of compensation from Uganda National Roads Authority. Now most of the landlords are decrying that their tenants no longer want to pay rent claiming that anytime, UNRA will start demolishing houses.

Geoffrey Bwire, one of the residents says that it has been now three years since the evaluation exercise was done. He notes that unless UNRA is going to re-evaluate them, the first valued compensation money is no longer adequate for their properties.

Moses Okwera Mugisha, an area councilor said that Uganda National Roads Authority paid some people in other areas , but Mutungo zone III residents are yet to be paid which is worrying the residents even more.

Jumah Kasonga, a landlord says they have waited enough without being paid, UNRA should come out and tell them that they failed to pay them and start renovating their rental houses so that they can earn from their property.

Sharon Muteesi, another resident said that they had been told that during the evaluation, they were to be given some small amount of money, saying that they had to pay landlords but even the little they were promised to receive hasn’t been paid.

However, Allan Ssempebwa, the Uganda National Roads Authority-UNRA Spokesperson has told URN that they have been having some financial problems but he assures all people whose properties were valued will be compensated. He however declined to explain on when the project is expected to commence.
