Parliament tasks minister Kamya on vendor evictions

Parliament on Mar.01 engaged in a heated debate regarding eviction of vendors from Park yard market in down town Kampala on orders of Kampala Minister Beti Namisango Kamya.Following a proposal by Kampala legislator Mohammed Nsereko, Speaker Rebecca Kadaga asked the Minister to present to parliament a list of vendors who were in the market and where they had been relocated to.

“It is always the poor in Uganda that are displaced. We need to fight for them. We can’t continue to treat Ugandans like they are rubbish”, the speaker said prompting MPs to question who for sure the developer is with Butambala county legislator Muwanga Kivumbi tipping colleagues to interest themselves in knowing who Hamis Kiggundu, the businessman going to develop the area is and who owns the money.

However Kamya who had given traders an un effected ultimatum of 30 days to vacate or be thrown out told legislators that the land was encroached on by vendors but efforts to regain the space by Nakivubo board had failed for over 20 years due to political interference.
