NUP coordinator accuses police of torture

Jinja, Uganda |  THE INDEPENDENT | The National Unity Platform-NUP party Women coordinator in Jinja city, Manjeri Kyebakutika is accusing police of torturing her following her arrest on Sunday evening. Kyebakutika was picked up while journalists shortly after attending the Kyabazinga’s coronation anniversary at Igenge palace.   

She was reportedly accused of donning a red beret in public, which was gazetted as part of the official army attire last year.Contrary to earlier reports that she had been detained at Jinja central police station, Kyebakutika claims that she was driven to an unknown location where she was tortured unsparingly.

Kyebakutika is currently admitted at Specialist doctor’s Clinic in Jinja City Southern division, says she sustained chest and back injuries. She claims after torturing her, her tormentors dumped her on the roadside where she was helped by a passerby.

The Kiira Region Police Spokesperson, Abbey Ngako declined to comment on the matter, saying investigations were underway to establish what could have happened.
