MUST gets police station after death of student

Mbarara, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT  |  Police has opened up a police station at Mbarara University of science and technology following the death of a student last week

The police station was opened today following a meeting by the Mbarara district security committee to address cases of increased insecurity in the area. 

Brian Akampurira, a 2nd-year medical student of Mbarara University of Science and Technology-MUST was last Friday found dead in TASO village near a lagoon. The  deceased is believed to have been waylaid by thugs at a bridge connecting TASO village to Katete in Nyamitanga division on Thursday night on the way to the his room.

The Police has now reacted and opened a Police Post at the University for what the authorities say is aimed at easing quick response to matters that concern the security of the students.  

Rwizi regional police spokesperson Samson Kasasira says that move follows several cases where students have been waylaid and their belongings mainly phones and laptops are taken away. He says that the new development will also see the introduction of motorized and non-motorized patrols being jointly carried out by the police and Uganda peoples defense forces with in and around the University as well as their hostels.   

Kasasira adds that the police have also increased their presence around the Law Development Center – Mbarara study centre in Kakiika.   

Mbarara resident district commissioner, Captain James Mwesigye says that the Joint operations are to be intensified. He further revealed that Security in conjunction with the University authorities are to workout modalities to have all hostels inspected but also engage hostel owners on security of their premises especially with lighting. 

Ryan Umar Muhumuza, the Mbarara University of Science and Technology guild president says that the students have been met and sensitized on their personal security both at hostels and on their movements to and from the university. 

He says that the decision to improve security within and around the University is a relief to them since students were living fear.
