Ministry of Health concerned about blood shortage

Uganda is currently engulfed in a blood shortage crisis with deaths being reported across the country and Mulago heart institute suspending all major operations.

In her statement to the press, the minister of state for Health in charge of primary health care, Sarah Opendi, attributed the current crisis to interruptions in the supply of kits and other reagents.


Blood group 0 and blood group A are completely unavailable.

“An emergency arrangement has been made to test blood from our regional blood banks of Arua, Gulu, Kitovu and FortPortal at Nakasero and Mbarara blood banks until the kits arrive in the country on June 10th (Monday) .These four regional blood banks use different technology for testing their blood” read the minister’s statement in part.

The minister also expressed the position of the ministry that they will normalize the supply in all regional banks.  She is also confident that the available consignments can take the country for about three months.

People ought to take the developments seriously as they affect the life of each individual in the country.
