Maurice Kirya: I share traits with Bob Marley

Maurice Kirya 1

What do you consider the most overrated virtue?

Foreigners; Ugandans tend to rate expatriates too highly and we give them more attention than we give to ourselves. We believe that systems run faster and more efficiently when managed by a foreigner. We just don’t believe that enough good can come from us.

On what occasion do you lie?

I can only tell lies that I can live with. I would lie to a kid to make them better especially in hard situations such that I can give them a chance to fight.

Loving, respectful and hard working.

Which words or phrases do you most overuse?

‘Awesome’ is my word of appreciation and when I am mad, I keep quiet for a moment and after say ‘dare no more.’

What or who is the greatest love of your life?

My little brother Leonard Kirya because I have no choice; I don’t have one person anymore I can love to the moon and back like him.

When and where were you happiest? I have many, which I can’t gauge because every day is special.

I would love to be a kick boxer.

What do you consider your greatest achievement?

To be the artist that I am today; it’s an achievement for people to stand out and say Maurice is one of the influential and inspirational young people in music. If it wasn’t for that, I would have given up long time ago.

If you were to die and come back as a person or a thing, what would it be?

The very person I am, doing and living better than I did the first time.

Cape Verde for having clean air and awesome beaches. It’s the kind of place to fall in love.

Khaled Hosseini for the Kite Runner; he gives such a beautiful picture that makes you smell the environment he is describing.

I read a book about Bob Marley that made me discover that we have so much in common. The only difference is that most of the time I mean what I say, which was not to him otherwise we share so many traits.

Who are your heroes in real life?

My late mum Sophie Baguma will always be; I don’t know of anyone else who has powerful shock absorbers like she did. From bringing us up to what she went through as a mother but remained powerful and never shaken.

What is your greatest regret?

There are many but most of them are because I was young and not too wise like I am today. There are things I think I would have done differently at a younger age but they have all got do with people.
