Luwero, Uganda |  THE INDEPENDENT |  Anglican Bishops in Luwero District have hailed the late Archbishop of Kampala Archdiocese, His Grace Dr Cyprian Kizito Lwanga for initiating the joint Christian Council.

The Luwero Nakaseke and Nakasongola- LUNANA Council was established in the first years of Lwanga’s service after his consecration in 1997. It aimed at ensuring that Christians from all the religious denominations in the districts of Luweero, Nakaseke and Nakasongola unite for spiritual and social development.

One of the most noticeable characteristics of this initiative was the joint Ecumenical public way of the cross. Before its establishment, the Catholics could solely participate in the Way of the Cross at the Our Lady of Fatima, Queen of Peace Kasana Cathedral and the Anglicans in St. Mark’s Cathedral.

The norm has been that the Bishop of Kasana-Luweero Diocese, the Bishop of Luweero Diocese and the Leader of the Orthodox Church in Luweero along with thousands of their flock gather at Kasana Cathedral.

On Tuesday during the special requiem mass for Lwanga at Kasana Cathedral, Rt. Rev. Eridard Kironde Nsubuga, the Bishop of the Luweero Diocese said that the initiative by Lwanga brought brotherhood and unity among the two religious denominations, the Catholics and Anglicans in Luweero.

Bishop Nsubuga’s predecessor Rt. Rev. Evans Mukasa Kisekka’s eulogy was delivered by his wife Robinah Kisekka. According to Bishop Kisekka, the public way of the cross did not only bond the Catholics and Anglicans, but also attracted many more believers to join Christianity.

Rt. Rev. Paul Ssemogerere, the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Kasana-Luweero commended the late Lwanga for uniting Christians. Bishop Ssemogerere asked the clergy to keep the Joint Christian Council strong in memory of the late Archbishop Lwanga.

Archbishop Lwanga will be buried on Thursday inside Lubaga Cathedral.
