Kalangala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The islanders of Kalanga unilaterally suspended the Ministry of Health guidelines and presidential directives for preventing the spread of Covid-19, not only opening the bars but also operation them throughout te curfew hours on 24th and 25th December.
Many of the bars and clubs on the archipelago were just filling up with people enjoying bottle after bottle by 1am in Kalangala Town Council and nearby landing sites of Mwena, Lutoboka, Kasekulo, who continued drinking and making merry until daylight.
According to MoH guidelines on Covid-19, the curfew time is 9pm though in Kalangala most revelers only started leaving the bars and staggering to their homes at 5.00 am.
Residents who appealed for anonymity and off record for security purposes told URN reporter that Kalangala’s Covid-19 status is not worrying since there are few cases discovered.
Covid-19 doesn’t stop us from enjoying life in this festive season since we comply with some measures like washing hands while entering bars,” said the islanders.
It should be remembered that in August 2020, the Kalangala Divisional Police Commander was beaten with a bottle of beer in Maama Muwada’s bar whiletrying to enforcing the curfew.
This scared security personnel from going to bars to enforce the curfew rule. This has also given a chance for bars to open and work trans night as police shy away from them.
Despite Police shying away from checking on open bars at night, some of their officers in the distant islands are reportedly also patronising these bars during curfew time, though they are not even supposed to be open at any time.
Of recent, Police in greater Masaka Region warned violators against violating SOPs as they can be agents of spreading the Covid-19 pandemic in the country.
In Kalangala, most bars no longer bother to oserve the guidelines and directives, and simply open and break the curfew as well.
