Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | MTN MoMo has partnered with C-Care (IHK Hospital) to make it easier for patients and their families to pay for healthcare services using mobile money.
The partnership introduces an integrated digital payment system that allows patients, caregivers and other family members to settle medical bills directly from their MTN MoMo wallets at participating C-Care facilities across Uganda.
Under the arrangement, customers can make payments without incurring MTN MoMo transaction charges. The system also provides a secure payment process in which customers authorise transactions using their personal MoMo PIN, receive instant confirmation and obtain receipts through the hospital’s system.
The initiative is expected to offer greater convenience to households managing medical expenses, particularly where the person paying the bill is not the patient or is not physically present at the hospital.
Speaking about the partnership on October 29, Phrase Lubega, Managing Director of MTN MoMo, said the integration reflects the company’s efforts to develop digital financial services that address everyday needs.
“Digital financial services deliver their greatest value when they solve real problems in people’s everyday lives. Healthcare is an essential service, and paying for it should be as convenient and straightforward as possible,” Lubega said.
She said the partnership would enable patients and their families to settle medical bills through a simple authorisation process, with immediate payment confirmation and no MoMo transaction charges.
Lubega added that MTN MoMo wants to expand the use of mobile money beyond conventional transfers and make it a practical payment option across essential sectors.
“Our ambition is to make MoMo a practical payment solution across the services people depend on, from healthcare and education to transport and retail,” she said.
For C-Care, the integration provides an additional payment channel intended to improve the patient experience and simplify the process of settling medical bills.
Dr. Miriam Mutero, General Manager of C-Care IHK, said the partnership supports the hospital’s efforts to make its services more accessible and convenient.
“At C-Care, we recognise that the patient experience extends beyond the care we provide to include every interaction, including the process of settling medical bills. Integrating MTN MoMo into our payment system gives our patients and their families a convenient, secure and reliable alternative for making payments,” Mutero said.
She described the partnership as an important step towards improving service delivery through digital solutions that respond to patients’ changing needs.
To use the service, customers visiting participating C-Care facilities should inform the cashier that they intend to pay through MTN MoMo and provide their registered mobile number. Once a payment request is initiated, they review and authorise it using their personal MoMo PIN.
After a successful transaction, the customer receives a confirmation message from MTN MoMo, while C-Care receives confirmation through its hospital system. A payment receipt can then be obtained from the hospital.
MTN MoMo has advised customers not to disclose their PINs to anyone and to approve only payment requests they recognise.
Customers whose accounts are debited without confirmation from the hospital are advised to retain the transaction message and provide the transaction ID to the cashier for verification. They can also seek assistance from MTN Customer Care by calling 100 or from a C-Care customer service representative.
