Nigeria’s Sunday Olapade and Rugumayo share lead at Johnnie Walker Uganda Pro Open
Kampala, Uganda | PHILLIP CORRY | With stunning birdies on his two opening holes, Nigerian Sunday Abimbola Olapade roared into the joint lead at the Johnnie Walker Uganda Pro Open at the Uganda Golf Club today.
The burly golfer from Ikoyi Golf Club in Lagos showed his intentions early, when he started his opening two holes – hole 1, par 5, and hole 2, par 4 – with eagles and then followed it up with 3 birdies, 11 pars and 2 bogeys for a score of 5 under-par 139 after 36 holes.
“I’m feeling confident, and this title is back to Nigeria. “Honestly today has been a fantastic day, and my game has been fantastic,” Olapade confidently said on the 18th green after holing out.
He is now level with Uganda’s best at the tournament, Ronald Rugumayo who is still looking for his maiden victory.
“The game plan remains the same; we will just play every hole accordingly, and everything is in my hands going into the next round,” Rugumayo stated.
Rugumayo maintained his momentum but dropped two double bogeys on holes 15, par 4, and 18, par 4.
He brought in 4 birdies, 1 eagle and 11 pars.
Three amateurs made the cut: John Musiimenta, Gilbert Chalwe, and Dominic Musonda, winner of the just-concluded Uganda Amateur Open.
It also has last year’s winner Celestin Nsazuwera from Rwanda making the cut and four past winners, including 7-time winner Dismas Ndiza Anyonyi from Kenya, Uganda’s Deo Akope, Dayne Moore, the 2024 winner from Zambia, and Robson Chinoi from Zimbabwe .
