Hoima residents embrace COVID-19 vaccination

Hoima, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT |  The number of people receiving the covid-19 vaccine in Hoima district has increased in the last week.  Hoima district received 5,230 doses of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine in March.   

Dr Lawrence Tumusiime, the Hoima District Health Officer- DHO says initially when they started rolling the exercise in March, many people shunned the exercise due to the side effects of the vaccine.      

However, he says the district has registered progress since the number of people taking the COVID-19 jab has increased since last week.   

According to Tumusiime, more than 3,500 people have taken the COVID-19 jab within the last week. He says that those that have been vaccinated include teachers, Journalists, medical workers from various health facilities, the elderly and other front line workers.  

Dr Tumusiime notes that much as the front liners in the district have embraced the vaccination, the uncertainty about the safety of the vaccine is still affecting the exercise.   

Tumusiime further reveals that ever since the outbreak of the covid-19 pandemic in the country, Hoima Regional referral Hospital Ebola Treatment Unit has handled 137 clients with only one active case remaining.

The cases were from Hoima, Kikuube, Kiryandongo, Masindi, Adjumani and Kyankwanzi. 

Jane Kobusingye, a resident of Hoima City who received the COVID-19 Jab, says that the government should intensify sensitization among the public about the vaccine.

COVID-19 vaccination in Hoima is taking place at Hoima Regional Referral Hospital, Kigorobya Health Center IV, Bujumbura Health Center III, Buseruka Health Center III, Mparangasi Health Center III among others.
