Dutch envoy donates vehicle, motorcycles to Kiryandongo police station

The Netherlands Embassy through the Refugee Law Project on Wednesday July, 1 donated an assortment of transport equipment worth 70000 US dollars to Panyadoli Refugee Police Station, Kiryandongo district.

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Panyadoli refugee police station in Kiryandongo district has received a boost of four motorcycles and double cabin vehicle from the Dutch envoy.

The Police Chief Political Commissar, Asan Kasingye received the donation from the Netherlands Ambassador to Uganda, Henk Jan Bakker on Wednesday morning at Naguru police headquarters on behalf of the Inspector General of Police –IGP Martin Okoth Ochola.

According to Bakker, the donation valued at USD 70000 (Shillings 260M) was made possible through the Refugee Law Project.

In his speech, Kasingye noted that the vehicle and motorcycles will help police to reach out to refugees in their settlement camps and thereby increase access to justice.

“We shall now be able to address problems of gender based violence-GBV, human rights violations & delayed response to crime incidents,” Kasingye said.

Police acknowledged the continued support from Bakker and the Dutch Embassy that includes among others training police officers in refuge law.

The donation of the vehicle and four motorcycles add to the increase of the police fleet. A recent police report indicated that their fleet had increased 1,800 vehicles and motorcycles in the last three years.

The report that was prepared by the former Director of Research in the Uganda Police, Edward Osiru Ochom and Kasingye shows that police fleet has grown to 9,226 up from 7,410 in 2017.

“These are composed of 1228 general-purpose vehicles, 186 specialized vehicles, 19 construction vehicles, 7736 motorcycles, 53 marine vessels,” reads the document.

The force also boasts of three helicopters and one fixed-wing aircraft, which is used for emergencies.

Martin Okoth Ochola, the Inspector General of Police has severally applauded the Justice Law and Order Sector –JLOS and some embassies for donating several motor vehicles to the force.
