Doctor on the spot for allegedly extorting money from patients

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | A doctor attached to Amach health centre IV is in trouble for allegedly extorting money from patients.

Dr. Pius Omach, who doubles as a surgeon at the facility is being accused of demanding money from patients before they can be operated on. According to reports, the doctor asks for between 300,000 to 500,000 for all major surgeries and between 30,000 to 80,000 Shillings for a Caesarian section.

The money is normally collected by Ambrose Ogwang, a security guard of the facility.

A patient who preferred anonymity says that she paid 30,000 Shillings for a C-section performed by Dr. Omach.

Johnson Ayo, a resident of Amach town council says that his wife was referred from Amach health centre IV to Lira Regional Referral Hospital after he failed to pay 80,000 Shillings.

Similarly, Nelson Otiti, the representative of the patients on the health center management committee says that they are investigating the allegations.

Dr. Omach declined to comment when contacted. Dr. Isaac Orech, the in-charge of Amach health Ccntre IV said he had not received any formal complaint.

Freddie Okwe Abadiang, the Mayor of Amach town council says he has received numerous complaints from patients. He says that he has summoned the two doctors for a meeting over the matter.
