Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The General Court Martial in Makindye has remanded three private security guards over the murder of 70 year old Aidah Nabwami, a resident of Seke village, Kiseka sub county in Lwengo district.

The accused are Abdul Razak Rizuk, a security guard, Denis Kashamba, formerly a security guard with Saracen Uganda Limited, and Denis Mugisha, an armoury man also formerly employed with Saracen as a regional supervisor for greater Masaka.

The trio who have been on remand in Kitalya government prison since December 2020, have this afternoon been arraigned before the seven-member panel of the Court Martial led by Lt General Andrew Gutti, who amended the charges against them to include a third count of doing grievous harm.

After amending the charges, the court read to the trio their charges afresh and they denied responsibility.

They were previously being charged with murder and aggravated robbery.

Court heard that on September 6th 2020, while in Seke village, Kiseka sub county in Lwengo district, with malice aforethought, the trio caused the unlawful death of Aidah Nabwami, a 70-year-old, using an SMG riffle which is a monopoly of the defense forces.

According to the prosecution, also on the very date, the accused robbed Jjemba Ashadi, a mobile money agent of five million shillings and his two mobile phones before doing grievous harm on him.

The records show that Aidah Nabwami was shot in the chest and she died shortly after reaching hospital, while Jjemba was admitted at Masaka Regional Referral Hospital in critical condition but managed to survive.

According to the prosecution, the accused persons had deadly weapons, SMG serial number UG Pol 56-590333832976 which was used to kill Nabwami and SAR number 22012721 used in the robbery against Jjemba, the guns which are all said to be ordinarily a monopoly of the defense forces.

But after denying the charges, the prosecution led by Captain Ambroz Guma told court that investigations into the matter are complete.

Accordingly, the trio has been sent back on remand at Kitalya government prison until September 28th 2021, when hearing will commence.

The amendment of the charges has come at a time when at least 26 people have been murdered by machete wielding assailants in Lwengo , Masaka and Bukomansimbi districts.
