Kampala, Uganda |  THE INDEPENDENT | At least 96 more people suspected to have orchestrated and fueled last month’s protests have been arrested.

Security personnel from the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence-CMI, Internal Security Organisations –ISO, Crime Intelligence and Flying Squad Unit –FSU have been tracing suspects who are accused of planning and delivering logs, fuel and tyres to the protesters.

The protests that sporadically spread to more than 20 districts followed the arrest of National Unity Platform –NUP presidential candidate, Robert Ssentamu Kyagulanyi.

Kyagulanyi was violently arrested by police commanded by, Frank Mwesigwa, at his campaign venue in Luuka district on November 18 thus sparking two days’ protests.

By Monday last week, Police Spokesperson, Fred Enanga, indicated that the total number of suspects stood at 1,014 but it has since increased to 1,110.

“There are no new deaths that have been recorded. The number of suspects is 1,110. That is the update,” Enanga said.

The new arrests are part of the 300 people joint security agencies claimed had mobilized the protesters and given them support in terms of mobile money and transported tyres for burning.

A Superintendent of Police told Uganda Radio Network that most of the new suspects are in the hands of CMI and Crime Intelligence.

“We have no new suspects in KMP cells but many people are being arrested by CMI. We have received people coming to us thinking we have their relatives. We have informed them to check with CMI or SIU,” the source told URN.

The November 18 and 19th protests resulted in the death of 54 people while more than 100 others were left nursing bullet wounds. People died when security personnel from military, police and spy units started firing in buildings and at bystanders.

Criminal Investigations Directorate under the leadership of its Director Grace Akullo handed over a partial report to President Yoweri Museveni indicating that 32 out of 54 were protesters whereas 20 others were innocently killed. Two others were knocked dead by cars fleeing the fracas.
