Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Wakiso district councilors have refused to pass the 320 Million Shillings Covid-19 supplementary budget.

During the council meeting held on Thursday, the Wakiso LC V chairperson Matia Lwanga Bwanika presented the supplementary budget and requested the council to approve it.

He told the councilors that the budget seeks to facilitate inland travels, allowances to facilitate Covid-19 meetings, vehicle and motorcycle maintenance, communication programmes on radio stations, facilitation of village health teams and task forces among others.

However, councilors led by Patrick Kalema rejected the estimates on the ground that they were no figures attached to each of the activities.

Lewis Kayanja suggested that the budget be referred to the finance committee for further scrutiny and to allocate the funds appropriately.

Speaker Nasiif Najja directed the supplementary budget to the finance committee with relevant committees and departments for scrutiny.

At the same council meeting, the councilors approved the appointment of the district executive committee whose names were presented by Bwanika.

Bwanika appointed Betinah Nantege, a councilor from Wakiso town as Vice-chairperson and secretary for finance, Kate Namuddu for production, Margaret Nakitende (Gender), Immaculate Nkinzi Mazzi (Health, education and Sports) while Bwanika will serve as secretary for works.

The council also elected committees that will scrutinize and oversee the work of the technical wing. The committees include Works, Gender and community development, finance as well as production and Natural resources.

Bwanika commended the councilors for overwhelmingly approving the executive committee. He explained that his choice was based on capability and balancing of positions.

Nantege described the appointment as a surprise saying that she was only lobbing to be a member of the Works Committee.
