US Ambassador reaffirms continued support of health care in Uganda

Fort Portal, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The United States of America has pledged to continue financially supporting  healthcare initiatives in Uganda in order to combat epidemics and other health challenges.

William Popp, the US Ambassador to Uganda said this during his visit to Fort Portal Regional Referal Hospital, to monitor the projects funded by the United States of America in Fort Portal City on Wednesday.

The purpose of the ambassador’s visit was to monitor and witness the impact of partnership of the US government to the hospital.

Some of the projects funded by the US at the Hospital are the Emergency Operation Centre – EOC, Antireteral viral Therapy-ART clinic  among  others

During the visit,  Dr. Alex Adaku, the Fort Portal Regional Referal Hospital Director revealed that the Rwenzori region is prone to epidemics and the hospital needs support in research and containing such epidemics.

In his response, the Ambassador affirmed that the US will continue supporting the hospital through funding the EOC.

With support from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention -CDC, the EOC has developed coordination mechanisms for preparedness and response to infectious diseases, including COVID-19.  The EOC was also used to handle Ebola patients during the 2022 Ebola outbreak in Uganda.

Ambassador Popp highlighted the pivotal role of healthcare in promoting economic prosperity and social progress, emphasizing the importance of collaborative efforts in tackling health-related obstacles.
