Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Uganda’s International Police (Interpol) Director, Assistant Inspector General of Police Moses Balimwoyo, has retired from the police force after more than four decades of service.

AIGP Balimwoyo who joined police in 1974 becomes the sixth high-ranking officer in police to retire in two years after their contracts were not renewed by President Museveni and the third to quit in a space of one month. The others are AIGP Lemmy Musa Twinomujuni, AIGP Asuman Mugenyi who retired after 32 years of service, Dr Steven Kasiima, AIGP Godfrey Bangirana, and the director of Welfare and Production Elizabeth Muwanga.

Police spokesperson Fred Enanga said the veteran police officer has already handed over office to his deputy.

“He has handed over to his deputy Senior Commissioner James Birungi who is now in the acting capacity,” Enanga said. Our efforts to speak to AIGP Balimwoyo are still futile. However, Police’s Chief Political Commissar Asan Kasingye applauded Balimwoyo as a person who served Uganda with zeal, honour, integrity and professionalism.

Until last year, Balimwoyo was the Director of Police’s Human Resource Management. But President Yoweri Museveni moved him to Interpol which was vacant after the retirement of another senior officer Fred Yiga.
