Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Uganda is set to gain greater visibility on the international golfing circuit this September after the Pearl of Africa Golf Series became the country’s first professional golf tournament to attain Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) status under the Sunshine Development & BET Tour.

The recognition marks a significant milestone for Ugandan golf, elevating the tournament from a local sporting event to an internationally ranked competition and creating an opportunity to attract golfers from across the region and beyond.

The 2026 Pearl of Africa Golf Series is expected to bring together Uganda’s leading golfers and international competitors in Entebbe, placing the country in the spotlight as it seeks to strengthen its position as a destination for international sporting events.

Beyond the sporting significance, the tournament could generate wider economic opportunities across tourism, hospitality, transport, retail and other service sectors.

International sporting events bring together athletes, visitors, sponsors and businesses, generating demand for accommodation, food, transport and other services. They also provide an opportunity to showcase Uganda’s tourism attractions and business environment to international visitors.

For local businesses, such events can create opportunities to supply goods and services while building connections with visitors, sponsors and international participants.

The Pearl of Africa Golf Series is emerging at a time when Uganda is seeking to increase its visibility as a destination for international events.

Its new OWGR status gives Ugandan golfers an opportunity to compete for international recognition while increasing the country’s visibility within the global golfing community.

The recognition could also help attract more regional and international golfers to Uganda, potentially increasing the economic value generated by the tournament and creating a stronger platform for the development of the local golf industry.

Exim Bank Uganda is supporting the 2026 Pearl of Africa Golf Series alongside other partners, backing an event that brings together sport, business and international engagement.

The bank’s participation comes as the tournament enters a new phase of growth, providing an opportunity for the private sector to support platforms that showcase Uganda while creating connections between local and international participants.

The growing scale of the tournament demonstrates how sporting platforms can contribute to broader economic activity when supported by strong public and private sector partnerships.

Hotels, restaurants, transport companies, retailers and other service providers can benefit from increased activity generated by visitors and participants.

For Uganda, the tournament presents an opportunity to build on the visibility created by the event and strengthen its reputation as a destination capable of hosting internationally recognised competitions.

The economic benefits of sports tourism can extend beyond the duration of a tournament. International visitors who experience a destination through sporting events can return as tourists, investors or business partners, while international exposure can strengthen a country’s profile among potential visitors and investors.

Entebbe showcase

With the Pearl of Africa Golf Series scheduled for Entebbe this September, its OWGR recognition represents a major step for Ugandan golf and provides a platform to place the country before a wider international audience.

For Exim Bank Uganda, supporting the tournament positions the bank alongside a growing platform that is advancing Ugandan golf while creating opportunities for tourism, business and international engagement.

The tournament’s progression also demonstrates the potential of sport to contribute to Uganda’s wider economic ambitions by combining competition with tourism promotion, business networking and international exposure.
