Ugandan food, wildlife, and hospitality await AFCON fans

COMMENT | NANTEZA SARAH KYOBE | As East Africa prepares to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), my message to football fans and visitors across the continent and beyond is simple: pack your bags, bring your wallets, and prepare for an unforgettable experience.

Uganda has it all! From rich culinary traditions, infectious rhythms, and vibrant nightlife to world-class national parks, pristine beaches, and breathtaking adventures, there’s truly something for everyone.

I will begin by saying, ‘Karibu to East Africa!’ Karibu to Uganda, the Pearl of Africa! We welcome you with open arms. Feel at home in a country where football is merely the opening whistle for a broader journey of culture, relaxation, and lasting memories. We look forward to welcoming you with warm smiles, genuine hospitality, and the irresistible beat of our traditional drums.

When it comes to food, Uganda is a paradise of flavours, blessed with a rich tapestry of cultures and traditional dishes to suit every palate. You can wake up to a hearty meal of groundnut Katogo, offal or beef Katogo, and, of course, our iconic Rolex, the one you eat, not the one you wear!

Our weather is another reason to fall in love with the country. On any given day, you can wake to bright morning sunshine, pass through overcast midday skies, enjoy a refreshing afternoon shower, and return to golden sunshine by evening. Where else can you experience such a dynamic tropical climate?

Now, let’s talk nightlife. Ha! Uganda knows how to celebrate! Whether you prefer live bands, cultural performances, or high-energy nightclubs, Kampala and our vibrant towns across the country offer endless choices. You can dance the night away, enjoy great music, and mingle with people from all walks of life. For those concerned about safety, security remains a top priority, with enhanced measures in place to ensure every visitor enjoys a safe and seamless stay during the tournament.

The food, the dance, the scenes, the people. Expect lifetime memories of Uganda

If nightlife isn’t your scene, no worries; Uganda has plenty of other adventures waiting. Our spectacular national parks and wildlife reserves are ready to be explored. From the majestic Murchison Falls and Queen Elizabeth National Park to the rugged, remote beauty of Kidepo Valley, Uganda offers wild encounters like no other. You can also venture into Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, Kibale Forest, Mount Elgon, and the Rwenzori Mountains National Parks.

Each destination has its own unique magic. Imagine watching elephants, lions, giraffes, and buffaloes roaming freely in their natural habitats. Uganda is also a paradise for birdwatchers, with over 1,000 recorded species, while nature enthusiasts can marvel at a wide variety of primates, butterflies, and rare botanical life. For a truly transformative experience, go gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park; it is a rare encounter you will treasure for life.

While road travel to some of these eco-tourism destinations can take several hours, convenient options are readily available. Visitors can book domestic charter flights to airstrips near their chosen parks, making it seamless to combine match days with safari adventures.

For those drawn to water, sunshine, and relaxation, Uganda boasts scenic lakeside beaches along Lake Victoria. Picture yourself enjoying fresh fish caught straight from the water, taking in the cool breeze, and watching the sunset. You can explore spots like Coco Beach, Aero Beach, White Sand Beach, Munyonyo, and One Love Beach. Whether you want to unwind, listen to music, or try water sports, the lake delivers.

Accommodation is another detail you don’t need to worry about if you plan and book early. Uganda offers options for every budget and preference, ranging from boutique lodges, eco-resorts, motels, and luxury hotels to campsites, self-catering apartments, and local homestays. Whether travelling solo, as a couple, with friends, or with family, you will find lodging that fits your needs—from single, double, and twin rooms to family cottages, private villas, and spacious serviced apartments for larger groups.

My key piece of advice: book early.

With AFCON 2027 expected to attract thousands of football supporters, tourists, and official delegations, planning early will secure your preferred choice and ensure a comfortable stay.

My invitation remains simple: come for the football, but do not leave without experiencing Uganda!

Taste our food, dance to our rhythms, explore our wildlife, unwind on our shores, and feel our people’s warmth.

Welcome to Uganda, the Pearl of Africa. Tubasanyukidde!
