Uganda to carry out its 6th census in May 2024

Uganda to carry out its 6th population & housing census in May 2024 as President Museveni Launches the exercise.

KAMPALA,UGANDA | Xinhua| Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni has rallied the country’s citizens to embrace the 6th national population and housing census scheduled for May next year.

Museveni launched the census in Kampala, the capital of Uganda, Tuesday when he said the exercise would help the government to plan better for its citizens.

“The aim seems to be finding out how many people are in the country, where they are, how well off they are, what they own and where they access public services from,” Museveni said.

“You cannot plan for people well if you don’t know them well. When figures come in, it will help us plan well for various places,” said the president, adding that the country’s population has been growing over the years because of improved services rendered by the government.

“I call upon all Ugandans to stay home and be counted on the dawn of May 10, 2024,” Museveni said.

According to Chris Baryomunsi, the minister of Information, Communications Technology and National Guidance, who spoke at the ceremony, the last census conducted in 2014 revealed a total population of 34.6 million in the country.

“Currently, the population is projected to stand at 46 million. To plan better for government services, it is important to know the exact figure,” the minister said. ■
