UBOS starts household listing in cities ahead of 2024 census

Household listing is ongoing in all cities.

Mbale, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The Uganda Bureau of Statistics-UBOS has initiated household listing in cities across the country in preparation for the national population census scheduled for May 9th and 10th of this year.

During the launch at Mbale City Hall Chambers on Monday, Didacus Okoth, the Senior Public Communication Officer at the Uganda Bureau of Statistics, explained that the objective is to identify all households in various specific areas across the 11 cities in the country.

Okoth emphasized that the household listing aims to facilitate the identification of households in a particular city, making it easier to determine the number of enumerators needed to count the population. He noted that metropolitan areas pose unique challenges compared to rural areas due to the constant movement of people day and night.

He noted that the exercise would focus on identifying the number of houses in a specific cell or ward. Rex Achelin, the Mbale City Resident Commissioner, announced that the two days designated for the census would be holidays to ensure that people are at home and can be accurately counted.

Achelin also cautioned individuals affiliated with religious groups against undermining the government program, stating that the law would catch up with anyone attempting to subvert the census process.
