Two suspected mobile money thugs arrested in Entebbe

Hussein Umar, and Akasah Faizo

Kampala, Uganda |  THE INDEPENDENT |  Entebbe Police are holding two suspected thugs who have been terrorizing mobile money agents around Kampala.

The Deputy Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire identifies the suspects as Hussein Umar and Akasah Faizo.

The duo was arrested on Monday for attempting to rob James Ongom, an M-Pesa agent in Entebbe town. According to police, the suspects have been conducting their criminal activities in Katwe, Kabalagala, Abayita Ababili, Jinja and Mbale towns together with their sister, Talal Kaibo and grandmother, Wahil Ibrahim who are still at large.

Preliminary police findings show that the suspects have been using hired vehicles to execute their missions. Police says the suspects would approach mobile money agents and trick them to buy for them refreshments before they rob whatever is in their cabin.

However, when an agent refuses to move, they signal to the lady who usually remains in the vehicle to come and chloroform their victim before they make off with the money. Owoyesigyire says they have so far two victims who have have filed complaints at Entebbe Police Station.

He says police have also impounded three vehicles used in the thefts that were tracked using security cameras.

He cautions mobile money agents to remain vigilant and report suspicious people to police for appropriate action to be taken.
