Stanbic Bank’s Mwogeza wins CFO of the Year Award

Kampala, Uganda | IAN KATUSIIME | It was a night of glory for Stanbic Bank when Samuel Fredrick Mwogeza, the Chief Financial Officer won top honours at the 2018 CFO Awards on Oct. 18 at a ceremony held at Kampala Serena Hotel.

Mwogeza scooped the CFO of the Year and Strategy Execution Awards marking him out as a hot shot executive in Uganda’s highly competitive banking sector.

“This award is testament to the excellence of the team at Stanbic Bank. They are really good people and this shows that Stanbic is going to lead the way,” Mwogeza said.

The CFO awards, in their second year running were held under the theme, ‘Finance in a Digital World’.

The awards were organised by Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) Uganda and Deloitte.

Mwogeza beat off competition from Godfrey Byekwaso, General Manager Finance, Centenary Bank.
Other winners on the night were Allan Musoke Kyambadde, the CFO of UAP Old Mutual Insurance who won Young CFO of the Year Award.

Celinah Nalwoga, CFO of Milima Technologies, a cyber-security firm, walked away with the Small and Medium Entreprise (SME) sector award. Susan Shereni, the Head of Department Finance and Administration at Infectious Disease Institute (IDI) scooped the Not for Profit Award. The two were the only female winners on the night.

Michael Segwaya, CFO of Barclays Bank, won the Finance and Technology Award while Godfrey Byekwaso, General Manager Finance, Centenary Bank, bagged the Finance Transformation Award.

The Public Sector Award went to Edward Iruura, the Director Financial Services, Electricity Regulatory Authority.

This year, the awards had eight categories, an increase from the five last year. The SME and Young CFO categories were additions to boost competitiveness and include the key segments of the finance sector.

The judges were Mabel Kasente Ndawula, Director Consulting – Strategy and Operations, Deloitte, Sam Ntulume, MD NC Bank, Edith Nalyanti Kakuba, MD Rock of Ages Holdings Uganda, and Joyce Tamale, MD Uganda Health Marketing Group (UHMG).

Beatrice Isagayite, the Head of ACCA Uganda said the awards will significantly make the CFO position a more competitive position and inspire hard work from company employees. She added that ACCA is also conducting mentorship in universities to equip young people with the requisite skills as they join the professional world.

The CFO awards seek to illuminate the essential role that the finance function plays in driving integrated thinking in decision making and in building sustainable business models. They also aim to share best practice, drive awareness, inspire action and develop a community of finance leaders.
Additionally, the awards are meant to raise the profile of CFOs and their changing role in developing good business and finance practices. The 2018 awards saw a 38% increase in nominations with a total of 186 nominees.
