Soldier, two civilians arrested for extortion in Oyam district

Oyam, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | A UPDF soldier attached to Bombo general headquarters and two civilians have been arrested for extorting money from road users in Oyam district.

Sgt. David Mugisha, no-RA141534 together with two civilians identified as Sale Ocen and Ben Odongo pitched camp using a motor vehicle registration number UAT 491L along the Gulu Kampala highway from where they were receiving money from road users.

Following a tip off by concerned citizens, police highway patrol from Kamdini police station swung into action and managed to impound the vehicle at around 7pm from Karuma and arrested the three suspects.

Patrick Jimmy Okema, the North Kyoga Regional police spokesperson confirmed the arrest saying the suspects have confessed to the crimes.

“A search was conducted 50,000/= was recovered in the pockets of the army officer who said he had robbed it from people,” said Okema.

The trio are being held at Kamdini police station on charges of robbery under SD ref 12/01/07/2021.
