Police creates new command units in Gulu

Gulu, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The police have created three new regional police command units in Gulu. The new units include Bardege-Layibi division, Laroo-Pece division, and Gulu district.

The region previously had eight District Police Commanders but the new command units have expanded the territorial area to 11 respectively.

The acting Regional Police Commander Stephen Kaija says that the region has received officers attached to these new administrative areas. They include ASP Kondrad Byomugisha, OC Station transferred from Katwe Police Station to Bardege-Layibi division as its first Division Commander.

Austin Ocen, the Acting Police Commander for Gulu City is relocated to Laroo-Pece Division as the Division Commander, and Swaibe Taban moved from the human resource department to the District Police Commander for Gulu district.

“We found it wise to create regional commands in the city to respond to the urban population explosion and its challenges” Kaija explained.

However, he noted that the force is still unable to deploy the officers in those newly created administrative units due to lack of infrastructure.

“Yes they have all reported, but there are no facilities established in those areas to effect their deployments,” Kaija said.

At least 63 police constables were equally deployed in the 11 different administrative areas that include Pader, Omoro, Nwoya, Amuru, Agago, Kitgum, Lamwo, Gulu district, and Gulu city.

However, the Assistant Commissioner of Police for Community Affairs Muleterwa Anatoli has urged the Commanders to coordinate with the local leaders in the management of crime in their administrative areas.
