NUP replaces Mpuuga with Zaake amid Corruption Claims

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The National Unity Platform (NUP), made a significant change in its representation in the Parliamentary Commission. Mathias Mpuuga, who held the position, has been recalled over corruption allegations. Acting president of NUP, Lina Zedriga, conveyed this decision in a letter dated March 15, 2024, citing Mpuuga’s inability to provide a satisfactory explanation regarding the controversial allocation of Shs500 million to ruling party commissioners in Parliament.

In Mpuuga’s place, Francis Zaake, the Member of Parliament for Mityana Municipality, was appointed. Zaake, known for his independent stance, had previously been removed as a commissioner but was reinstated by the court, a decision that is now under appeal by the Auditor General.

This decision by NUP came after a 10-day ultimatum was issued to Mpuuga, requiring him to justify his position as a commissioner. In a letter dated March 5, 2024, Acting President Dr. Lina Zedriga explained that the decision was reached during a meeting of the party’s National Executive Committee on March 4, 2024.
