NRM leaders in Kayunga demand facilitation for LCV by-election

NRM secretary general Richard Todwong urged party leaders and members to reconcile in a bid to take the party forward.

Kayunga, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The National Resistance Movement-NRM leaders in Kayunga are demanding funds for mobilization in the LCV chairperson by-election.

Last month, the Electoral Commission set December 16, 2021, as the election date for the by-election. The seat fell vacant after Ffefeka Sserubugo, the LCV chairperson for Kayunga district was found dead. His body was found hanging by the tree near his home in Kayunga.

Although the party has not yet revealed its budget for the election, the district party leaders have warned the NRM Secretariat against snubbing them.

Kaggwa Kasolo, the Kayunga town council NRM chairperson says that they risk losing the seat if the campaign funds are not availed.

Diriisa Kimbugwe, a mobiliser at Busaana criticizes the secretariat for selecting non-residents in the area to lead the teams canvassing for votes of their flag bearer. He adds that it is hard for them to battle their rivals from other political parties, most of whom are using money to win over voters.

The Director of Mobilization, Cadre identification, Recruitment and Placement at the NRM Secretariat Rosemary Nansubuga Seninde says the secretariat plans to camp in the district to woo residents to the NRM party.

Seninde who is in Kayunga with NRM party officials notes that winning the Kayunga by-election will be the first step to revive the party’s support in Buganda.

The NRM Secretary General Richard Todwong says that reclaiming NRM support will continue in other parts of the country after the Kayunga by-election.

The Electoral Commission set November 29 and 30, for the nomination of candidates and campaign meetings will be conducted for thirteen days starting from December 2 to 14.
