Nabilatuk villages affected by flash floods

Nabilatuk, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Hundreds of residents in Lokaala parish, Nabilatuk district have been displaced by flash floods.

The floods affected Lokaala Primary School after the river flooded forcing learners and teachers to flee the school premises.

Zacharia Onyang, the LCI Chairperson of Lokom village in Nabilatuk Sub County said that the flash floods have swept the villages of Napayan, Nawonyonoit, and Lokaala primary school.

Onyang noted that several households were forced to leave their homes and have sought refuge in the town. He added that all the gardens have submerged and the crops destroyed yet it is the only seeds people had for this planting season.

Onyang said that the homes have been devastated by the floods and there is fear as rains continue to pound the region.

He said that he has submitted a report on the disaster to the district leaders and is still waiting for a response.

Michael Lokungur, a teacher at Lokaala Primary School said that flash floods took them by surprise at around 5:00 pm as the learners were preparing for supper.

Lokungur said that the learners and teachers were immediately evacuated to Township Primary School for safety as they waited for the water levels to reduce.

Lokungur appealed to the government and the well wishes to consider providing the school with treated mosquito nets to combat malaria infections.

Paul Lokol, the LCV Chairperson of Nabilatuk noted that three homes in Lokaaka Parish were submerged.   Lokol said that the district authorities have already visited the affected areas to ascertain the damages for further action.

He also revealed that they are still compiling the report that will be submitted to the Office of the Prime Minister for possible support.
