Bunyangabu, Uganda | NEWS CORRESPONDENT | More than 78 residents of Bunyangabu District secured employment and practical construction skills through a Movit Foundation education infrastructure project that has culminated in the handover of a five-classroom block at Kadindimo Primary School.
Officials said the project demonstrated an approach to corporate social investment that combines social infrastructure with local economic participation and skills transfer.
According to the project’s completion report, more than 78 community members were actively engaged and employed during construction, receiving hands-on training in specialised interlocking brick technology. The skills acquired can potentially be applied to future construction projects within and beyond the community.
The project involved the donation of 70 desks, the construction of five classrooms, tree planting, and external civil and landscaping works. Interlocking stabilised bricks were manufactured directly on site, using a Makiga brick-making machine provided by the Movit Foundation.
Movit Foundation Board Chairman Dr Bruce Mpamizo said businesses should increasingly examine both the immediate and long-term value generated by their social investments.
“As a board, our interest goes beyond what we build. We want to understand who benefited, what capabilities were created, and whether the investment can continue to generate value after the project has been completed. At Kadindimo, the community participated in building the infrastructure and acquired skills in the process.”
The project adopted on-site production of interlocking stabilised bricks, reducing transportation requirements while maintaining a steady supply of walling materials. Materials were assessed for compliance, with continuous technical supervision maintained during construction. Dr Mpamizo said the project’s most significant return will ultimately be determined by the educational opportunities created over the life of the facility.
Guest of Honour, Minister Balaam Barugahara, welcomed the investment, describing stronger collaboration between the government and the private sector as important to Uganda’s development.
“Private-sector investment in communities should not be viewed only through the lens of philanthropy. When businesses invest in education, skills and livelihoods, they contribute to building the productive capacity that Uganda needs for long-term development.”
He encouraged businesses to identify areas where their capabilities, expertise and resources can complement government development priorities and respond to genuine community needs.
The facility has been completed to the specified quality standards and is ready to serve the school community despite the project faced heavy rainfall, supply chain disruptions, and increases in construction input prices during implementation. The project team responded through revised construction schedules, advance procurement and adjustments to material sourcing.
Officials at Movit Foundation said the Kadindimo project reflects a broader shift from traditional corporate giving towards social investment designed to leave behind physical assets, economic opportunities and capabilities within beneficiary communities.
