Kenya’s Eliud Kipchoge won the Rio Games men’s marathon gold medal on Sunday. Ethiopian Feyisa Lilesa won silver with American Galen Rupp earning bronze.

Kipchoge, 31, timed 2hr 8min 44sec on a wet but picturesque course that snaked below Rio’s mountain-top Christ the Redeemer statue, winning by more than a minute.

“This is the best medal that I’ve had in my life. It wasn’t really easy but I felt comfortable,” said Kipchoge, who is tipped for an assault on Dennis Kimetto’s world record.

Kipchoge added the marathon gold to the 5,000m silver he won in Beijing in 2008 and bronze he captured in Athens in 2004.

Uganda’s Solomon Mutai finished 8th, defending champion Stephen Kiprotich 14th and Jackson Kiprop 8oth.

The result means Uganda will not return from the Olympics with a medal. This is the 10th time it is happening in our 15 appearances at the games. Earlier, Joshua Cheptegei finished 8th in the 10,000m final.
