Sembabule, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The police in Sembabule have arrested a machete-wielding assailant from the home of Mary Begumisa, the District Woman MP.

The assailant identified as Swaibu Kanyama, 37, reportedly jumped over the perimeter wall fence and entered the legislator’s home in Kiggundu zone, Lwebitakuli sub-county.

The incident occurred at around 11pm when Kanyama, a resident of the same area broke into one of the rooms and hid there. Begumisa was not at home by the time of the incident. The home caretaker identified as Fahad Ssejjoba was watching television when he heard some strange noise outside. He then came out of the house to check what was happening within the home premises.

No sooner had he come out of the house than Kanyama lashed out at him with the machete. Sejjoba swiftly ran back to the house and locked himself in one of the rooms while making an alarm.

Kanyama chased after him but missed him, and in the process instead broke into one of the rooms and hid there.   Ssejjoba called Mateete and Lwebitakuli police station for help. They arrived and entered the house through the main door which was open.

They further searched the house and found Kanyama hiding in the room and took him to Sembabule police station.

Muhammad Nsubuga, the Southern Region Police spokesperson says they are yet to establish Kanyama’s motive but investigations have kicked off.

MP Mary Begumisa could not be reached for comment as her phone remained busy.

The incident comes just days after the legislator petitioned Parliament seeking security following constant harassment and intimidation from Anifa Bangirana Kawooya, the State Minister for Health in charge of General Duties.

But Kawooya strongly denied the accusations saying they are baseless.
