Lira, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Lira hospital has expanded the COVID-19 treatment centre following a surge in the number of cases.
The current treatment centre can admit only 30 patients however it is stretched with five additional patients. This has forced asymptomatic patients to seek treatment under the home based care.
Judith Namirimu Polah, a senior principal nursing officer supervising the treatment centre explained that the facility is filled up due to the surge in the number of cases. She explains that the extra treatment centre will be located in two tents within a designated area at the hospital.
According to Namirimu, each of the tents will have a capacity of 30 beds. The two tents were last year delivered by the Ministry of Health and were erected at the former Akii-Bua stadium in Lira city.
Namirimu says that there is also a need to increase the number of health workers at both treatment centres. She explains that the treatment centres require at least three physicians.
Last week, the Ministry of Health delivered 10 oxygen cylinders and 10 regulators to support the COVID-19 patients at the treatment centre.
On June 16, 2021, the Ministry of Health received US$ 7million approximately 25 Billion Shillings from the Global Fund to install seven oxygen plants across the country. These plants are to be installed in Mbarara, Hoima, Fort Portal, Kampala, Mbale, Lira and Arua.
