Life sentences handed down to kidnappers and murderers of Maria Nagirinya

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The High Court in Kampala delivered a stern judgment, sentencing Copriyan Kasolo, the orchestrator of the kidnapping and murder of social worker Maria Nagirinya and her driver Ronald Kitayimbwa, to life imprisonment. His co-conspirator, Johnson Lubega, known as Manomano, received a similar life sentence for their involvement in the heinous crimes.

The court expressed its dismay at the motive behind the crimes, citing financial gain as the sole driving factor. Justice Isaac Muwata, the presiding judge, characterized the murder as gruesome and terrible, emphasizing that no punishment could ever compensate for the loss of the victims. Both convicts displayed no remorse throughout the trial.

Justice Muwata underscored the importance of deterrence in preventing similar offences against the public. The severe life sentences were deemed necessary to protect society from the actions of the two convicts and to send a strong message to potential wrongdoers.
