Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Local Council chairpersons in Mukono municipality have started mobilizing for food to support vulnerable people who missed out on Covid-19 relief funds.

The LCI chairpersons at Ggulu ward, Wantoni, Kitete, Ngandu and Kitega are reaching out to people of goodwill for support. They argue that some households missed out on the covid-19 relief cash under unclear circumstances.

Last week, the government started the distribution of the Covid-19 relief cash to the vulnerable populations in municipalities and cities.

Benedict Mukasa, the Kitega LCI chairperson notes that they are overwhelmed by people who include taxi touts, roadside vendors and slum dwellers flocking their homes demanding assistance.

Muhammad Wasswa Takwana, the Ggulu ward chairperson says that his area has more than 15,000 residents but none benefited from the relief cash.

He says that every week, the leaders will identify the most vulnerable people in the area and extend food relief which includes posho, matooke and beans.

Jalia Namusu who used to sell sweet plantains at Wantoni taxi park says she is currently stuck at home without food to feed her three children. Namusu’s husband is a boda boda rider who also stays at home after they were banned from carrying passengers.

Mukono Municipality Community Based Development Officer Jackeline Mirembe says much as the municipality may have more than 30,000 vulnerable people, they were told to register only 14,000 people to benefit from the relief cash.

Mukono Municipal Mayor Elisa Mukasa Nkoyoyo says the government should think about other strategies for supporting vulnerable households.
