Katakwi man arrested on allegations of child sacrifice

Katakwi, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Police in Katakwi district have arrested a man in relation to the gruesome murder of a three-year-old child only identified as Ationu. The suspect, Patrick Alabwa was picked up from his home in Aketa village, in the wee hours of Wednesday with the help of the police sniffer dog.

His arrest followed the discovery of the decomposing body of the minor in a swamp in Aketa village. Preliminary findings indicate that the minor was picked up from their home in Akwamoru village, on the night of Thursday, October 6, 2022.

On the fateful day, the parents of the minor, Silver Ationu, and his wife Jesca Todu had taken one of their children to the clinic after suffering a sudden attack, according to George William Oluka, the Aketa parish chairperson.

He says that the assailants took advantage of the situation to pick one of the two children left alone in the house for the alleged sacrifice. After beheading the minor, the assailants removed the body parts of their victim.

“The family hadn’t even taken long in the clinic when they returned and found out that one of their children was missing from the house. They searched the entire village with the help of the neighbors at night but didn’t find the child,” he said.

Oluka says that the police have been following up on the case since the matter was reported to Ongongoja police post. When contacted, Oscar Gregg Ageca, the East Kyoga Regional Police Spokesman said that officers were still on the ground to provide more details on the matter.

Last year, a woman was allegedly killed and her remains burnt into ashes in another alleged ritual sacrifice in Oigomumwa village, Ongongoja sub county. According to Oluka, the suspect in last year’s case has since been released.

“We are living in fear at the moment because so many scaring events are happening in the area. We need the security teams to help investigate this matter and arrest whoever is behind these rituals”, Oluka added.
