Kayunga, Uganda | IAN KATUSIIME | Kayunga district leadership has installed street lights on the bridge to Isimba dam following a directive by Minister for Energy and Mineral Development Ruth Nankabirwa. The minister made the directive while starting her tour of the energy sector on Sept. 14 at the 183 MW Isimba Hydro Power Plant located in Kayunga district.

Nankabirwa also directed the Isimba dam contractor to fix all the remaining defects on the dam that was commissioned two years ago by President Yoweri Museveni. On her tour of Isimba, Nankabirwa was in the company of state minister for energy Okasai Opolot, the CEO of Uganda Electricity Generation Company Limited (UEGCL) Harrison Mutikanga and other officials from the energy ministry and UEGCL.

The new minister was taken through the plant’s power generation process that ranges from a power house, generators and control rooms by the Isimba generation manager Michael Esimu. Esimu told the minister about the defects on the dam and revealed that they were working with the contractor to lessen the setbacks created by the defects.

Esimu said the contractor China International Water and Electric Corporation was in the process of downsizing since most of the construction work was virtually done. While on the tour, Mutikanga told minister Nankabirwa that UEGCL does not have the land title for parts of Isimba which the minister vowed to work on immediately.

Nankabirwa and the officials also toured some of the residential houses constructed for Isimba staff with plans underway for more units. In her speech, Nankabirwa told UEGCL staff not to worry about the issue of mergers which has been making news lately about government agencies. “Concentrate on your work,” she urged them.

Eng. Badru Kiggundu, the chairman of the energy projects steering committee, was also present on the day of the tour.
