Fake teachers storm COVID-19 vaccination centres

Vaccination focus has been on teachers lately.

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | A number of individuals are fluking the ongoing COVID-19 vaccination at centres that were preserved for teachers and their support staff.

The vaccination exercise for teachers in Kampala schools started on August 25, as one of the measures to prepare for the reopening of schools. Up to 10 centres were ringfenced for teachers within the jurisdiction of Kampala Capital City Authority -KCCA.

Although teachers were asked to present a letter from their schools and a national ID as a prerequisite for getting the jab, our reporters observed that the procedure was not followed. Instead, all one needed was to register themselves, fill a form and get the jab.

Josephine Nakaye, a teacher from City Parents School in Rubaga division says she completed the process without any need for her school identification. Rehema Faridah Naluwembe, another teacher from Rosa Kindergarten says she came with both the school and national ID but never found a need for it.

At Bat Valley Primary School, the registration papers were laid on tables outside the vaccination hall and there was no scrutiny of who was accessing the venue. In some cases, all that was asked for was the National ID and not any other document for proof of profession.

Gerald Agaba, one of the Ugandans who walked in to get the jab said he had visited several centres and had been turned away due to lack of vaccines, yet he needed to be vaccinated to facilitate his impending travel to Qatar.

Najib Kintu, another walk-in said that he could not miss out on the opportunity even though he did not qualify for the jab.

However, KCCA Communication manager Daniel Niwabiine, says the exercise targets teachers and their school support staff and the issue of school identification need emphasis to block the opportunists.  According to Niwabiine, over 4,000 teachers and support staff had been vaccinated by close of business yesterday,

The exercise is supposed to close today, August 28, but according to Niwabiine, it might be extended to August 31 if there are more teachers to vaccinate.
