Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Leaders of Persons with Disabilities-PWDs in Mukono district want the government to consider creating special inoculation centers for their members for the second and booster COVID-19 doses.
The leaders say that some of their colleagues have started contacting them for assistance following the new scare of COVID-19 infection. Recently, the Minister of Health Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng warned the country about an increase in the number of COVID-19 cases compared to the stable trend observed since January.
Ramadhan Lubowa, the PWDs leader in Mukono municipality, says that the majority of his colleagues managed to get the first dose at the village level but currently vaccination is only at major health facilities. According to Lubowa, Mukono municipality alone has over 2,500 PWDs and about 300 managed to receive the second dose.
Abdu Majara, a PWD at Nasuuti in Mukono Central Division, says that they mobilized and took some of their colleagues for the second dose but gave up on the arrangement since it requires a lot of money, especially for people staying outside the municipality.
URN has established that so far, only Goma Health Center-HCIV and Mukono General Hospital are conducting COVID-19 vaccination in the municipality. In other parts of the district, the exercise is conducted at the HCIIIs, which have lately run out of vaccines.
Steven Mulindwa, the Mukono District Health Officer-DHO, says they are yet to conduct a new campaign aimed at reaching vulnerable people at the grassroots after receiving new doses. He appeals to residents to practice the standard operating procedures intended to prevent COVID-19.
Mukono district managed to vaccinate 360,962 for the first dose and 270,816 for the second dose. According to the DHO, a huge number of people in the district are unvaccinated. Mukono district is home to over 700,000 people.
