Luwero, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The caretaker Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Luwero, The Rt. Rev. James William Ssebaggala, bid farewell to Christians as his tenure came to an end, amid pleas from the faithful. Bishop Ssebaggala was appointed as caretaker bishop of the Luwero diocese by the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, Dr. Stephen Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu, in July 2023.

This appointment followed the annulment of Rev. Canon Godfrey Kasana Ssemakula’s election as the diocese’s fourth bishop. On March 6, 2023, the House of Bishops elected Rev. Canon Wilson Kisekka as the fourth Bishop of Luwero diocese.

A week before Wilson Kisekka’s enthronement on Sunday, March 24, Bishop Ssebaggala, a retired bishop of Mukono diocese, led his final service at St. Mark’s Cathedral, a day ahead of his official retirement date from the caretaker role (March 18, 2024), bidding goodbye to the congregation.

During his farewell, Bishop Ssebaggala urged the faithful who pray at the Cathedral to devote more energy to serving the Church. He noted that while the Cathedral attracts new visitors who come to pray and benchmark, it is unwise to set standards for mischievous individuals, emphasizing the importance of excellence in all endeavors.

The prelate also encouraged the faithful to collaborate with Wilson Kisekka, their new Bishop, in their physical and spiritual development. Kisekka, aged 53, has served as the archdeacon of Ndeeba Archdeaconry in Mukono Diocese.

Meanwhile, as the day for the enthronement ceremony draws closer, Rev. William Mirimu, the head of communications for the Luwero Anglican Diocese, disclosed last week that they were still hunting for approximately Shs255 million. According to Rev. Mirimu, they had raised approximately Shs350 million out of the required Shs600 million for the whole budget.
