Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa [BADEA] has announced a USD 2 million grant to Uganda to fight the ongoing Ebola epidemic that broke out over two weeks ago.

The announcement was made today at State Lodge Nakasero by BADEA Chairman Board of Directors, Dr Fahad Abdullah Al-Dossari, while meeting President Yoweri Museveni. It comes at a time when Uganda is battling the deadly disease which started in Mubende before spreading to the areas of Kagadi, Kyegegwa, and Kassanda.

The Ministry of Health has confirmed 43 cases of Ebola and reported 29 deaths since the declaration of the outbreak on September 20, 2022. Medical experts say that the current outbreak in Uganda is caused by a relatively rare variant of the virus known as the Sudan strain, which raises a number of medical and operational challenges since there is no known vaccine for the strain of the virus.

In a statement provided by the Presidential Press Unit, Museveni welcomed the BADEA team and thanked them for partnering with Uganda in implementing development projects. He highlighted areas such as the completion of oil roads, funding of the oil pipeline, refinery, commercial agriculture and manufacturing industries as priority areas that BADEA should be interested in.

Dossari disclosed that the Bank has been supporting a number of projects through their credit line in Uganda Development Bank (UDB) such as the Uganda Heart Institute, rehabilitation of roads, the building of bridges in Northern Uganda, irrigation schemes, rural electrification among other projects.

The Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA) is a financial institution owned by eighteen Arab countries, members of the League of Arab States (LAS) which signed its establishing agreement on February 18, 1974.

The Bank is an independent international institution with the objective of strengthening economic, financial and technical cooperation between the Arab and African regions and the embodiment of Arab-African solidarity on foundations of equality and friendship among other objectives.
