Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The Most Rev. Dr. Samuel Stephen Kaziimba Mugalu, Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, has asked all people occupying public offices to refrain from engaging in corruption.

Speaking during the Easter Sunday service at All Saints Cathedral Church in Nakasero, Archbishop Kazimba explained that despite corruption having detrimental effects on society, it has become pervasive in Uganda.  He noted that; those who attempt to combat corruption and other illegalities often find themselves targeted by their colleagues.

Archbishop Kazimba shared an experience when a couple approached him, seeking to bribe him for a marriage certificate despite not being legally married. He shared that while he was in heavy financial need, the Archbishop refused the bribe, a decision that left the couple resentful.

Kazimba reminded Christians that the temptation of corruption often arises when individuals are vulnerable, but challenged public officials to uphold honesty and resist corruption tendencies.

The Archbishop’s message comes at a time when the country is awash with several allegations of corruption following a series of social media exhibitions led by Makerere Don, Dr. Spire Ssentongo, and other activists using that has  exposed abuse of office and gross management of public funds in Parliament.

Kaziimba also urged Christians not to focus their perfections on earthly things, but prepare for life after death by returning to God, giving their lives to Jesus, and beginning to do the right things.

He wondered why people are fighting for land that they will soon leave behind, when they die.

Easter Sunday is a celebration and holiday commemorating Jesus Christ’s resurrection from the dead, which is depicted in the New Testament as taking place on the third day after his burial following his crucifixion by Romans at Calvary.

The Christian society initiated the Easter holiday mood on Good Friday, which was marked by the way of cross celebrations.
