Mityana, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Residents of Nambute village in Bulera sub county in Mityana district have foiled the theft of their animals after intercepting a motor vehicle used by the suspected thieves.

Led by their village chairperson Expedito Kyakuwa, the residents impounded the commuter taxi at a roadblock they mounted in their village on Saturday night.

Residents set up a group of vigilantes to patrol the area to curb the rampant theft of livestock in their area and district as a whole.

Kyakuwa told URN that they decided to conduct patrols because of the rampant theft of their cows, goats and pigs, which they said has deprived them of any revenue.

He explained that upon interception of the commuter taxi, the suspects jumped out and fled for their dear lives.

Kyakuwa and other leaders restrained the residents against torching the vehicle that was carrying one goat. They took the vehicle and goat to Naama police station pending further investigations.

Residents blame the theft of their animals on youths who do not want to work and resort to quick ways of earning. Kizza Senkungu, one of the residents said that it was painful that after slaughtering their animals, the thieves leave behind notes telling them they can eat the offal.

Harriet Nambassa, another resident accused the area police of failing to take action against the thugs who have so far stolen more than 100 goats and 10 cows.

Wamala Regional Police Spokesperson Rachal Kawala confirmed the incident, saying the impounded vehicle is parked at Naama police together with the suspected stolen goat.
