Eugene, USA | THE INDEPENDENT & URN | Ugandan long distance runner Oscar Chelimo won bronze, as ace Joshua Cheptegei faltered in the Oregon World Athletics Championships 5000m final.

After Cheptegei failed to keep up with the pace in the last lap, Chelimo sprinted through the field in the final 100m to secure his first medal in a season best 13:10.20.

The race was won by 1,500m silver medalist, Norway’s Jakob Ingebrigtsen in 13:09.24. He took the lead with three laps to go and kept to the pace to the very end.

“It feels amazing. I won it and I needed it,” Ingebrigtsen said. “I felt really good today but at the same time, 5k is very, very tough.”

Cheptegei, who was seeking a double, had to do it without ace running mate Jacob Kiplimo, who has been a key factor in his World Championship glory this time round, and at the Olympics last year.

Kiplimo helped change the pace to Cheptegei’s advantage, when the 10,000m field seemed to slow it down in Eugene, and in Tokyo last year, did a lot of pace setting as the Ugandans secured glory.

Norway’s Ingebrigtsen, who faltered in his favourite 1,500m where he won silver, showed he has the mental strength for double medal glory.
