THIS WEEK: Justice Okalany wins prosecutor of the year award
Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT |High Court Judge Susan Okalany was on Sept.14 awarded an international accolade as the prosecutor of the year during an awards dinner organized by the International Association of Prosecutors (IAP) in Beijing China.
Okalany who is currently based at the High court in Mbale was recognized for role in the prosecution of the 2010 Kampala bombings terrorism case which is now considered the first major case to be prosecuted successfully in Africa.
The case that had 15 defendants from Uganda Tanzania and Kenya saw 82 witnesses being called. At the end of the trial, 8 of the defendants were convicted by then High Court Judge Alphose Owiny Dollo who was recently confirmed by parliament as the new deputy chief justice.
Over 70 people lost their lives in attacks at Kyadondo Rugby Grounds and Ethiopian Village in Kabalagala on that night.
