THIS WEEK: Government given 90 days ultimatum to settle prosecutors’ welfare issues

State prosecutors on July 17 suspended a strike that had been on for a week after government promised to handle their welfare issues.

During the meeting with the justice and constitutional affairs minister Kahinda Otafiire, prosecutors gave government 90 days to work on their issues or else they would put down their tools again. They said their salary is too low to settle their needs especially now when prices have generally gone high.

The lowest ranking prosecutor – a state prosecutor earns Shs600, 000 whereas the highest ranking – the senior principal state attorney earns Shs2.1million. Meanwhile, the salary of judicial officers is also set to be standardized and kept for life if the administration of the judiciary bill 2016 which is currently at cabinet level is passed by parliament.
