Mbale, Uganda |  THE INDEPENDENT |  Lydia Wanyoto, the National Resistance Movement Women’s League Chairperson has been declared winner of the NRM Residual Elections for Mbale City Woman MP.

Wanyoto was declared winner on Thursday by John Wanika, the Presiding Officer at the Mbale City hall. This is after fresh elections were conducted in the 58 villages whose declaration forms were missing last month.

Wanyoto garnered 36, 281 votes against her closet rival and incumbent Connie Galiwango Nakayenze got 19,113. Other candidates in the race were Namasaba Jalia who got 1,506 votes and Shadia Luwungule who has got 1,824.

The party tribunal ordered for fresh elections in 58 villages whose declarations forms are said to have gone missing.

Galiwango, said she turned down participation in the residual elections due to irregularities that were exposed by the NRM Electoral Commission in Mbale.

She noted that in the meeting with the electoral officials at the NRM headquarters in Kampala, they resolved that there will be fresh elections in 125 villages but instead the notice she received from the NRM Electoral Commission showed that the re-election was to be held in only 58 villages which she objected.

Galiwango says that she will contest as an independent candidate in the 2021 general elections.

Jthehea Namasaba, another contestant refused to participate in the residual elections citing bias by the registrars
