Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Musa Kirya, a Senior Government forensic analyst has placed Ibrahim Kaweesa alias Tetemwe at the second scene of the infamous Wakiso women murders. Kirya pinned Kaweesa while appearing before lady justice, Damali Lwanga on Tuesday afternoon.
Kaweesa was found guilty of murdering Annet Nakabugo on September 23, 2019 and handed a life sentence. However, prosecution led by Senior State Attorney, Ivan Ndiwalawa slapped him with fresh charges of murdering Stella Nanfuma.
Prosecution told court that on May 25, 2017 while in Kakiri in Wakiso district, Kaweesa together with three others including Eric Ssegawa, Isma Nyanzi, Suhairi Wakita and others still at large strangled Nanfuma to death after having sex with her.
Although Kaweesa wasn’t on the initial group of suspects arrested in connection to the murder, investigations by police linked him to the case. His DNA samples were analyzed to ascertain whether it matched with other pieces of evidence recovered from the crime scene.
Kirya told court that upon analyzing the biological material recovered from the deceased and the scene of crime, which includes the deceased virginal swap, nails, jacket and used condom among others, they were in harmony with the Kaweesa’s DNA sample.
“Your honor, the suspects DNA samples were matching with several biological materials submitted to the Directorate of Government Analytical Laboratory for analysis. His DNA was found in the mixed profile of the virginal swap got from the deceased,” Kirya told court while explaining his findings.
Besides Kaweesa, Kirya also said the biological materials more so those got from the condom that was collected from the scene matched the DNA samples of Wakita, which shows that the two could have heard sex with the deceased before her death. But Wakita used a condom.
Kirya noted that he failed to track any substance matching the third suspect Eric Ssegawa. He also noted that he couldn’t conduct DNA analysis for Isma Nyanzi given the fact that he didn’t receive any samples from the suspect in question.
Justice Lwanga adjourned the matter for further hearing on December 3 when prosecution will present other witnesses. More than 19 women were killed in the murders that occurred in Entebbe, Katabi and Nansana in Wakiso district between May and September 2017.
The lifeless bodies of the victims were found dumped by the roadside and sticks inserted in their vaginas. Kaweesa is linked to the murder of eight women in Nansana. They include among others Juliet Nampijja, Patricia Nansubuga, Maria Birungi, Josephine Nakazibwe, Teddy Nakacwa, Juliet Kyandali, Gorreti Nansubuga and Annet Nakabugo.
Several people were picked up by police in connection to the murders. However, the Director of Public Prosecution dropped charges against 12 suspects including Tina Prosper Nantongo, the wife to Kaweesa.
